Yom Ha’atzmaut

Wednesday 11 May 2005

Where: the Rod Laver Arena
Melbourne Australia

Israel Independence Day is celebrated annually, according to the Hebrew calendar, on 5 Iyar, the anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel. In 2005, it will be celebrated on the evening of Wednesday May 11.

In the past this activity has drawn crowds of over 3,000 people.

The celebrations commence with a “festival in the foyer” at the arena at 6pm . The festival includes exhibitions, interactive activities and music in an atmosphere of pure “blue and white” fun. There will be a range of activities run by communal organisations including musical, dance and comedy performances.

At 7.30pm , the celebrations move into the arena, with the major concert. We will be presenting the stars of Kochav Nolad ( Israel 's version of Australian Idol), Ha'achim Tzanchany who will be performing and bringing an authentic Israeli spirit to Melbourne. The main concert event features the some of the formidable talent of the Melbourne Jewish community in a celebration of dance, song, spirit and imagination. In addition, this will include some of the top talent in Melbourne, including comedians, singers and musicians will be performing at this event, but one which will lift your spirits and nurture your love and pride for Israel.

After the concert, we'll be clearing the floor of the arena, and creating a huge space for communal Israeli dancing. It doesn't matter if you are an expert dancer, or an absolute beginner, if you choose to dance in gender separate or mixed circles, this dance fest is for everyone, and a fantastic way to continue to express our “simcha” in Israel 's independence.
