March of the Living

ADULT MARCH OF THE LIVING (AMOTL) APRIL 2006

“The aim of the Adult March of the Living Australia is for adults of all ages to honour the memory of those who were murdered and suffered in the Holocaust and to learn the importance of struggling against racism and intolerance.”

The Adult March of the Living (AMOTL) is a commemorative, educative and interactive journey open to participants over three generations.

The March of the Living is an international, educational program that brings Jewish people (mainly teenagers) from around the world to Poland where they visit the sites of the Holocaust and on Yom Ha’Shoah march the four kilometres from Auschwitz to Birkenau. They then fly to Israel to observe Yom Ha’Zikaron, (Israel Memorial Day,) and Yom Ha'atzmaut. (Israel Independence Day)

The first March of the Living took place in 1988 as an international program designed for Jewish high school students from Canada, France, Mexico, and Greece. Many other countries now participate, including Australia. 2005 was the fifth March of the Living for Australian students and the second for an Australian adult group.

The Adult March of the Living:
Offers participants a safe vehicle to travel to Poland, to tread the landscape.
Allows people to commemorate and memorialize in a group setting.

PAULINE ROCKMAN, AMOTL Director
Gives the opportunity and privilege to travel with survivors - the 3 generations together. For survivors it offers a chance to be honoured and their experiences validated. For second generation they have the opportunity to be with the survivors, be part of their experience and to have a window to the third generation as to how they will commemorate the Shoah. For the third generation it is an opportunity to be with the survivors and to offer their response to the Shoah.

Gives the participants the opportunity to explore roots, seek out family history, and learn about the landscape, in a supportive and informed atmosphere.

Confronts the reality of Jewish life in today’s Poland.

Provides opportunities to engage in dialogue with non-Jewish Polish people.
